Street Food Heroes: A Cultural Revolution on a Plate by Houda Harb
In a region rich with flavour, history, and resilience, a new initiative is bringing our culinary soul to life on the world stage. Street Food Heroes by Zaroob UAE in collaboration with Anthony Rahayel ofNoGarlicNoOnions is more than just a food movement—it's a cultural revolution. Together, they are inviting everyday heroes from Lebanon and the Levant region to Dubai—not just to serve their food, but to serve theirstories, their passion, and the spirit of a region too often overlooked, yet endlessly inspiring.
This is not about importing recipes. It’s about transporting people. The hands that have kneaded dough in mountain villages, stirred pots on busy Beirut streets, and grilled meats over the flames of tradition—those very hands are now feeding Dubai, live and in person. Diners are not just eating dishes—they are living them, watching the magic happen in real time as the unsung legends of Levantine street food prepare the flavours of home with pride, humility, and fire in their hearts.
While the rest of the world races to collaborate with celebrity chefs and Michelin stars, Zaroob and Anthony Rahayel are taking a different path—one that leads straight to the heart of our culture. They are digging deeper, going beyond trends and titles, and honouring the true custodians of our heritage: the everyday men and women who have carried the legacy of our cuisine on their backs for generations. It’s not just refreshing—it’s revolutionary.
This marks a remarkable and emotional evolution of the NoGarlicNoOnions mission. Since its inception, Anthony Rahayel has tirelessly championed Lebanon’s culinary heritage, shining a light on the small, the hidden, the real. But Street Food Heroes is something different—it is the mission embodied. It takes celebration off the screen and into the streets of a global city. It says, “This is who we are. Come taste our legacy, prepared by the people who have lived it.”
At the heart of it all, Zaroob stands not only as a restaurant but as a platform—bold, generous, and visionary. Alongside Anthony, they are doing something few have dared: preserving our heritage not in archives or memories, but in flames and flavour, in laughter and shared meals. They are making sure that our culture is not only remembered, but lived, tasted, and passed down—with pride, not just nostalgia.
The journey began with none other than Abou Shady, Lebanon’s Foul Master, whose arrival in Dubai sparked a joyous frenzy. Over the last two weeks, he’s broken records—serving thousands of plates of foul and hummus, one humble bowl at a time, with that same signature smile that has become a symbol of dignity and hope. And now, the torch passes to Em Bachir, the Saj Queen of Faraya, known and loved across Lebanon for her unparalleled saj and the warmth she brings to every gathering. Her presence in Dubai is a moment of pride not just for her village, but for an entire nation that sees itself reflected in her strength and skill.
Street Food Heroes is joy. It is legacy. It is culture with a beating heart. And most of all, it is proof that the soul of the Levant is not fading—it is rising, plate by plate, smile by smile, hand in hand. In a world desperate for authenticity, for connection, and for meaning, Zaroob and Anthony are showing that the way forward is through our roots.
In Anthony's own words, "We're rocking Dubai!".
This is our story, and now, the world gets a seat at the table.
