17th Cedar & Maple Gala Keynote Speaker Announcement

We are thrilled to announce that Tony Chahine will be the keynote speaker at the 17th Cedar & Maple Gala on Thursday, May 7th.

Tony Chahine is the CEO and founder of Myant, a revolutionary company anchored in deep tech innovation, advanced materials, textile computing, research, and advanced manufacturing. On a mission to enable a future society where humans, animals, machines and Agentic AI co-exist in harmony, Tony holds an unwavering belief that through functional materials we can build a sustainable and connected future. He dreams of a healthcare system that is proactive, preventive, and personalized - where even the most vulnerable members in our communities have continuous access to, and benefit from, the advancements of technology for a better quality of life.

With a background in electrical engineering, Tony came to Canada in 1990 and quickly saw an opportunity to upset traditional electronics markets with new products and business strategies. In 1992, he founded Battery Plus, and in so doing was the first to bring innovative battery technologies to the North American market. He continued innovation in the retail sector by acquiring and transforming companies, with a focus on sustainability and ethically produced goods. In 2010 he started Myant, a textile computing company and new category maker that embeds sensors and actuators into fabrics. Myant’s initial products enable on-demand screening for medical conditions from anywhere. These include screening and studies for arrhythmias, sleep apnea and hypertension, using everyday textile computing products that continuously monitor vitals - such as a continuous electrocardiogram, stress, anxiety, core body temperature, gait and posture analysis. Myant is defining the Internet of Humans by transforming the $4T textile industry, with 80 billion garments are purchased yearly, enabling direct interoperability between the human body, machines and agentic AI, unlocking new levels of connectedness and healthcare to address critical global challenges.

Myant is changing how people connect with medical professionals through advanced material science, textile computing, and the AI-enabled Myant Platform. In that spirit he recently acquired Xerox Research Centre of Canada, one of the world’s most sophisticated deep-tech facilities for advanced materials, and founded Myant X. Sustainability and wellness, as well as planet and human centric design, are its core principles. Tony strongly advocates that Canada must take a global leadership role to become a highly innovative ‘making economy.’ He is convinced that innovation, prototyping, scaling, and commercializing are interconnected and most relevant only when executed together. As a visionary with focus Tony has been pursuing the dream of uniting the power of academia, government, and industry to best serve Canadians, and to allow our youth to thrive and excel.

“Pity the nation that wears a cloth it does not weave.” (Kahlil Gibran).

Tony Chahine is a visionary public speaker and a globally sought-after thought leader dedicated to innovation, inclusion, and the ethical evolution of humanity. His extensive leadership in the Canadian innovation ecosystem includes a five-year tenure on the Mitacs Board of Directors and current board positions with NGen. In 2024, Toronto Metropolitan University conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate of Science in recognition of his transformative contributions to science and industry. This honour underscores his lifelong passion for education and his unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation of Canadian talent.
