Bistro Den Huzaar Bruges, Belgium

I’ve been here in 2012 and still remember it to date. I remember to have enjoyed delicious food and that’s seven years ago! Back to Brugge, I decided to have lunch at Den Huzaar. A traditional Brasserie serving local specialties of which the casserole with pork cheeks, rabbit Flemish, filet mignon and others.

Not too welcoming to start, we were treated like tourists and asked -not politely- to sit at the back. “Can we sit on the upper level?” No! Was the answer. “Choose one of the back tables, not the front ones.” That’s Brugge’s problem, too touristic and it seems the locals don’t like it.

Shrimp to start, two micro shrimp, -suggestion of the chef- with bread and beurre d’isigny. The shrimp are not easy to eat, too small and the shell is stocked to the body. The butter container is dirty and hasn’t been cleaned for ages.

Unwelcoming and slow, we waited so long to be served... goat cheese salad to start, a thick slice of molten goat cheese topped with crispy bacon on a bed of vegetables and green apples. Cooked to perfection, the cheese melts like egg yolk and the bacon crunches pleasantly without chewing.

Another thirty minutes before we received the mains: mainly two new waiters joined and ours went to another section of the restaurant: lost time... It’s sad to see restaurants fall in their success. Seven years ago, I left amazed and was pampered like a “customer”. Today, turning into a meeting point for tourists, nothing seems to be as good as it was. Bad service, arrogance, clumsy waiters... that’s a restaurant to avoid!

French fries taste old oil, pork cheek lack flavor and salt with a gélatine sliding under the teeth after every bite. What a deception!

I had a favorite in 2012, forgotten in 2019 and I’m surely not coming back here soon.
