Claus: A Recommended Breakfast in Paris

Last time I was in Paris and being a fan of breakfast, the title “l’épicerie du petit déjeuner” made me want to visit. Unfortunately, the breakfast shop closed but the main restaurant is still open. I’ve been here, done that, enjoyed and now back for more choices; this time I’m having eggs and hot specialties among other creations Claus is known for; Oups! This time, I was not served and left hungry.

Back in 2016, I waited in line to find a table; today, arriving at ten, we were alone, in a calm restaurant preparing to receive guests who walk in to grab a croissant on the go. Lights cover the ceiling around a pole covered with mirrors, white tables, a wall covered with stripes of wood, a buffet of French bakeries and the coffee machine.

The restaurant is like a home kitchen. There’s a sink where waiters wash the dirty cutlery snoozing you with unpleasant sounds, shelves, plates, and wooden cupboards.

On the menu: Danish pastries and bread, homemade pastries, granola, fruits and cereals, organic eggs, toasted and tartines. Claus also has four breakfast menus you can choose from.

A good scone! Not like the one I had minutes ago at “Ten Belles Bread.” It tastes something at least. Moist, soft and rich. The Muffin! I’m a fan of chestnuts and having a chestnut muffin is a premiere for me. Flavors of class and style, aromas of Christmas, textures of madness! It’s so cool!

And we waited... thirty minutes for a plate of eggs! What is it with service in the last two days in Paris! How nice it is to see waiters going in and out of the shop to the storage area, grab customers croissants with their bare hands instead of using a clamp, and this is Paris!

One hour passed, I walked to the waiter who was supposed to serve us, and he didn’t even notice the problem. The bill was printed as is with no regrets. I always say that I never judge the problem because we are humans, but I do judge how the problem is handled; unfortunately unprofessionalism at its finest, the waiters didn’t even notice that we didn’t eat. They made me pay the bill, and we left making sure it’s going to be the last time.
