I’m a fan of the brand! Arriving at the airport in Milan, I was happily surprised to discover that Wagamama is not in Italy! At ten in the morning, you can’t order noodles but a selection of special breakfasts treats of which avocado in toast, eggs Benedict, Japanese style eggs among other creations.
The famous Wagamama setup awaits at the airport: long communal tables, open kitchen, yellow and white lighting, wood, lights pending from the ceiling and a grey floor.
I ordered today:
- Avocado on toast: two poached eggs, tomatoes and a mix of avocado.
- Eggs Benedict: two poached eggs with hollandaise sauce served on a lightly toasted Asian steamed bun with Wiltshire ham sprinkled with shichimi.
- Okonomiyaki: Japanese inspired omelet with bacon, chicken, prawns, shiitake mushrooms, red cabbage, leek, and dressed with Japanese sauces.
Despite the rough and lousy service, the very cold plates in which food is served and the super slow service, I enjoyed the food quality. I expected much better from Wagamama, yet I thought breakfast is still at its early stages. Much more training is required.
Bread of the avocados needs to be toasted, eggs Benedict need more hollandaise sauce, croissant looks dull requiring a better presentation... the omelet, rich and generous, juicy and tasty has too many onion slices. I believe coffee should be served in carton cups and offer a free refill.
I still adore Wagamama! I won’t crave it for breakfast, though.
