Hello Germany; today is the beginning of a long week around this beautiful country which I have dug into closely yet. Frankfurt, a five-hour drive to Munich, another five hours to Berlin and back to Frankfurt, it's promising to be a week of dreams.
Homey and dimmed, woody and authentic, we stopped at a restaurant next to a gas station on the way to Munich. I surely wasn't expecting to eat that well.
We waited to be served but the restaurant was fully loaded. German people, and I thought it would be local food. I ate something amazing, delicious, rich and flavorful.
Wood was all over the place, a low ceiling and a restaurant divided into four rooms, an old style cottage. Waitresses, many of which don't speak English, and a German menu. They will give you a multilingual menu if you ask for it.
On the menu, a selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner mostly meat. Escalope, sausages and fried items. It surely was not a good first impression... In a bad mood, we waited for someone to approach us. They made us wait because the language was a problem. We actually changed our minds as soon as we tried their food: It was delicious.
Lunch:
- A smoked ham platter served on a slice of wood. Extremely smoky, thin slices of ham with their fatty envelope served alongside pickles and lettuce. The plate comes with three slices of rye bread and butter.
- Escalope cordon bleu of pork: A large slice of fatty meat stuffed with cheese and ham. A plate served with green peas and potato croquette on the side. The meat is breaded, tender and juicy stuffed with melted cheese. Oil-free croquettes, tender peas served alongside a good chunk of meat. A lovely plate I'm happy to have ordered!
- The pork escalope is also delicious and served with fries. It only needs mustard and ketchup for more enjoyment. Tender, the meat is moist and juicy.
- Sausages, six of them are served with sweet choucroute and mashed potatoes. Delicious, like all the other plates, the tender sausages and soft cabbage are yummy indeed.
- German pancakes are fact something that looks like a pizza. A thin and tender dough, melted cheese, smoked meat and salt. I pushed away the onions and enjoyed this unique creation, another take on our Mankoushe with hints of finesse. Delicious is the least that can be said.
Sometimes you enjoy lunch at the least expected place. When you see locals dining, simply stay.
