Rue du Pain is a French pastry and restaurant in the heart of Bucharest, a place where hungry clientele meet every morning to enjoy some French delights… croissants, cakes and galettes.
Occupying a corner street, Rue du Pain (Bread Street) welcomes you with a display to the left, bread on the walls and some croissants. Stop in front of the display. Lines of Eclairs, pear apricot and peach tarts, flaky golden croissants, chocolate chip rolls and the famous cozonac brioche.
Exactly like all restaurants I've visited in Bucharest, good service and a welcoming attitude is not part of the deal. None of the ladies where smiling and one was actually shouting not to take photos; although on the board they clearly invite you to follow their social media accounts.
It's a Saturday morning and we waited 15 minutes to be seated. Michel Frere is the new pastry chef on duty. Lovely vibes, sounds of the coffee grinding machine, people talking. We waited 15 minutes to be seated and another 15 minutes for our order to come… finally it was time to enjoy breakfast.

Breakfast:
- Croissant: It could be better, but it is still very good. Here’s a golden colored croissant with a flaky feel and buttery taste made with premium ingredients. Its heart is lightly chewy, warm and tender while its corners are crusty. This is an excellent creation for Romania. The chocolate one is even better. The quality of chocolate is really good and slightly sweet. I would add a bit more filling to the roll.
- Eggs Benedict: A beautiful and special presentation on two-toasted pain de campagne, slices of ham and two poached eggs. The only thing that bothered me is the smell and aftertaste of the sauce but the rest was good.
- Quiches are fresh made with good quality ingredients. With a warm and tender heart, this quiche is light in crunch with a slight chewiness. They're good enough.
- Croque Monsieur is simply bread topped with cheese and ham. It lacks juiciness and finesse. To take a simple sandwich to another level, I would have mixed the cheese with creme fraiche.
- All quiches and sandwiches are served with a salad on the side, a mix of vegetables which needs seasoning, olive oil, lemon and salt.
After that I had a dark and thick hot chocolate, with no added sugar, it is creamy and tasty. It's one of those hot chocolates I've enjoyed and recommend you try.
Rue du Pain is a restaurant with a certain French touch… It’s one of the good places in Bucharest. Start your day in style, enjoy a good meal and a hot drink...'a la Francaise'.
