The restaurant appeared in all my searches and was recommended by many followers on Instagram: considered to be one of the city’s most famous restaurants, Maison Kammerzell is a hotel and restaurant on the main gathering place facing the cathedral.

The Kammerzell House is one of the most famous buildings of Strasbourg and one of the most ornate and well preserved medieval civil housing buildings in late Gothic architecture in the areas formerly belonging to the Holy Roman Empire.

Built-in 1427 but twice transformed in 1467 and 1589, the building as it is now, historically belongs to the German Renaissance but is stylistically still attached to the Rhineland black and white timber-framed style. It is situated on the Place de la Cathédrale, north-west of the Strasbourg Cathedral, with whose rosy color it contrasts in a picturesque way when seen from the opposite direction.

Old and preserved, the restaurant takes you on a journey to the fourteenth century. Browse the menu proposing several choices of choucroute and local specialties. If you prefer to be guided, take the menu. The Alsacienne Sauerkrout for my wife and the three fish for me, I was hungry and excited to taste the food.

Oh my God! That choucroute is outstanding! Three kinds of fish on a bed of cabbage; a creation coming down from heaven. The best choucroute I’ve ever had to date; cabbage marinated to perfection and juicy fish... every bite is balanced and made to impress. My wife’s choucroute garnie contains eight choices of thick ham cured and cooked for long hours giving them a beautiful texture.

Desserts are even better than the Sauerkrout! Waw! Innovative and beautifully presented desserts. Bravo chef! These plates are magical pieces.

I loved the food! Not the best service, not the most relaxing of setups but an experience I will repeat. A great value for money, we only paid 40€/person. It’s a restaurant for tourists, after all, so come with no expectations other than enjoying a super choucroute (Sauerkrout).
