Down at the famous -must visit- blue lagoon make sure to pass by the Lava restaurant. I suggest to book your Lagoon session after lunch or dinner so you can enjoy a superb meal at the fine dining restaurant located few meters away from the spring. Tonight, I'm having my last dinner in Iceland at Lava where local specialities are served.
Set inside a big hall surrounded by glass walls under a high ceiling, the restaurant hosts around fifty tables covered with a white table cloth, two forks, two knives, a bread plate and a glass of water with a wooden pepper mill and a candle.
On the menu you can choose from five starters each at $29, five main courses each at $59 and five deserts each at $23. I chose to have the baked yellow and red beets, the smoked haddock, the lamb filet and shoulder of lamb, the fish of the day followed by the caramel mousse and chocolate mousse.
Dinner starts with a plate of bread and whipped sour cream. Fresh bread, a complimentary glass of sparkling wine preparing you for the best to come.
Dinner is served:
- Baked yellow and red beets: mixed lettuce, radishes and plums. Turning a simple salad into a masterpiece, cooking a simple vegetable to make you crazy... wow! That's pure magic. Yellow and red beets cut in cubes, baked to perfection and mixed with lettuce, radishes and plums in a lightly sweet yet sour sauce. This plate deserves an applause.
- Smoked haddock fish: rutabaga, eye bread, potatoes and dill. Pure white, two chunks of fish lay on a bed of juice, a light green sauce. A super tender and juicy fish, crunchy cubes, onion rings and much finesse. A mix of amazing flavors and enjoyable textures to start your meal in style.
- Lamb filet and shoulder of lamb: artichokes, carrots, stars and thyme. Lamb served like angus beef. Tender, red but not bloody, beautifully textured... what tastes even better are the carrots served on the side. A masterpiece like Michelin chefs do it, this restaurant deserves to be recognized.
- Fish of the day: potatoes lobster sauce, kale, spring onions. Impressed, really impressed by this restaurant for tourists. I'm amazed by their food and the flavors found in every plate. This fish looks like a simple haddock but believe me it's much more than that! Super juicy, lightly salted, extremely flavorful fish served with kale and a creamy lobster sauce feeling like a green mustard. Wait, crunch into a green apple and feel its juice caress your buds...
When I thought that I couldn't be surprised anymore, here came desserts. Artistic creations of the best chocolate out there, a unique brownie, a one of kind sorbet, crumbles, sauces, creams... a local cake, a salted caramel cream, a light sorbet. I left impressed.
I was impressed by the setting, the service, how plates are recited, the decor, the food presentation and surely the taste of each single item I've tried tonight. I love t and I'll surely remember it for long.
