Oh, the food... awesome food! Hummus cooked to perfection, so tender and so creamy, mixed with lemon, olive oil and balanced with spices; half mashed, half plain, the hummus has an interesting texture in the mouth. Fatteh like no others, fatty minced meat, crunchy almonds, spices, and chickpeas. Labneh, acidic and strong. Wow! The eggs! Juicy eggs, moist and full of taste, the kind of eggs you will remember for long...
Back for another visit, I enjoyed the food and the mood so much that my emotions were juggling uncontrollably. In the heart of Jbeil comes “Khan Jbeil”, a traditional Lebanese restaurant where Mazen and Firas have put all the love they have acquired from their parents and beloved city, into in this emotional concept. It’s much more than a restaurant, it’s an experience of happiness. Foul like they do it in tyre cooked for long hours and soft like butter.
This deserves a line; Eggs with Kawarma and truffles; yes, unbelievably special and illogically tasty. Strongly aromatic eggs with a rich flavor of truffle and enjoyably melting cheese. A superb combination of truffle oil Labneh.
Now the bakery: because it’s not like any Manouche you eat on the street, the manakish are baked to awake your senses. The Manouche zaatar is as good as all the rest and even more: a Manouche toasted to perfection and cut in rolls like sushi. Served on a tray with a portion of Labneh and a Bonjus juice pyramid. It can’t be more traditional than this, funky and innovative. Cheese manakish, zaatar, Bulguary cheese and tomatoes, kaaket zaatar and cheese the last one: Kafta and cheese!
Now comes the interesting part: a creamy hummus served in a metallic pot and decorated with chunks of Kafta balls bathing in tomato sauce. Afterward, best for last, the “piece de resistance”, tender Kafta and juicy meat on a grill which spread aromas of positivity around the store.
Superb! Khan Jbeil feels like home away from home.
