Dine where Noma used to be! A sublime space made of wood with a view on the sailing ship and canal. After enjoying a memorable experience at Noma, here comes lunch at Barr, where Noma used to be before its closing in 2017.
At Barr, experience the open kitchen, the seating, and the beer bar. Two distinct spaces where the ambiance is casual, but the food is upscale and gourmet. Barr is a casual restaurant and bar, located on Copenhagen’s waterfront, serving up the classic dishes of Northern Europe like salted waffles, schnitzel, and Danish meatballs, along with a selection of traditional style beers, spirits, and wines. Barr’s menu embodies the essence of what people call the Northern Sea Cuisine.
I loved the mood, the service, and vibes; casual with no sophistication, Barr is a pleasant experience to try especially in a weekend. Warm lights inside, exceptional views outside, dining here is a journey that activates all your senses. Lunch starts with a warm biscotti feeling like a croissant, made of butter, with a slice of bacon and side of white cream. A strong taste of salt makes you want to lick your lips.
Bread is another story! This bread is phenomenally good. So buttery and intense, the bread is like nothing I’ve ever had before; yogurt bread with poppy seeds. A side of yellow butter and another of white butter with fried onions make the first impression a unique one.
Beer tasting:
- Marzen: a smoky yet light beer loaded with flavors and aromas. It’s not bitter; hops are fresh and gentle on the palette. Dark colored and softly bubbly.
- ESB: extra bitter, light bodied, floral and fresh.
On the menu: simple and straight to the point!
- Lumpfish Roe
- Hot smoked herring
- Cured ribeye
- Bone marrow
- Soup
- Danish meatball
- Schnitzel wiener
- Glazed Cod
I’m not sure how they do it in Copenhagen to create food as simple and as good. At Barr the waffle has a different taste with its fish row wide served on ice, you will be enchanted with no complication. I don’t remember when was the last time I enjoyed a delicious bone marrow; it’s so rich and so fatty, the bone marrow can be enjoyed with a spoon as is to feel its content. How smoked herring, a small piece of it and dated rhubarb on the side; more yumminess!
Main courses followed: the art of simplicity! Believe me; this is one of the best schnitzels I’ve ever had. So juicy, so crunchy and served with the appropriate amount of sauces and flavors. The glazed cod is undoubtedly not a creation from this world! Danish meatball! OMG. No words can describe my happiness.
Desserts are more than the mind can handle. I was so happy that I forgot to write the details of this dream experience. The softest sweet pretzel ever is served warm and covered with sugar. A crispy choux à la crème with a crispy craquelin on top. Super thin sablé with ice cream and caramelized apple jam inside. Creamy sherry mousse with crunchy walnuts bits. This is what happiness is; this is what food should be.
A memorable experience, one of the restaurants I will never forget. Visiting Copenhagen, Barr is not to be missed.
